Akpabio blames Emefiele for economic woes, says charges undecided

 Godswill Akpabio, the president of the Nigerian Senate, accused Godein Emefiele, a former governor of the Central Bank, of enacting certain monetary policies and practices that led to the nation's current economic problems and the suffering that goes along with them.

Akpabio claimed that Emefiele's monetary policies and actions during his administration left a trail of debts and an economic catastrophe that the present administration must deal with.

This was stated by the Senate President on Sunday during a Rivers State Thanksgiving service.

In his criticism of Emefiele, Akpabio emphasized the dire state of the country's economy and the difficulties Nigerians confront, such as hunger and the difficulty of providing three square meals a day.
He remarked, "A lot of people do not understand the kind of debts and economic mess that we are in," emphasizing that Emefiele's policies are to blame for the "weak economy" that the present administration inherited.


Akpabio stated that the federal government is still unsure about which charges to bring against Emefiele, listing "illegal possession of firearm" and "printing notes without income" as examples of possible charges.

 “So, the kind of debt and economic mess that we are in, a lot of people will not understand but I remember President Obama saying that you cannot know Washington until you get to Washington,” Akpabio said.

“So, by the time we went in to look at the economic situation of the country, it was terrible. You know that the former governor of the central bank, we did not even know what to charge him with. Whether to charge him for putting foam on top of the bill or to charge him for illegal possession of firearm or to charge him for printing notes without income, I don’t know what we are going to charge him with”, the Senate President said.

“But what we can is that yes there is hunger today because of the policies and actions that they took, and we recognise that, and I think every political party should recognise that there is hunger, and we are battling to ensure that Nigerians sleep with their eyes closed,” he added.

Akpabio gave reassurance that the government is actively addressing insecurity and enhancing Nigerians' quality of life in the interim. He asked the populace to have patience, stressing that it will take time to address the ingrained problems that have existed for nearly 60 years.

In addition, the Senate President urged Nigerians to assist the government's endeavors during this momentous time of transformation while restating the government's commitment to addressing the country's problems.
